Neonatal cardiac surgery: Preventing collateral damage
Promotor: Dr Felix Haas
Defence: 13 December 2013
My thesis was focused on the side-effects of open-heart surgery in newborns. Especially the effect on the brain was investigated, but also the systemic inflammation which occurs during and after surgery, which ultimately leads to a hypo-inflammatory phase with danger for infections. The inflammatory effects during surgery were assessed in the laboratory of Dr. Berent Prakken, and results have now been published (Algra et al; J Neuroinflammation. 2013 Feb 7;10:24; Cerebral ischemia initiates an immediate innate immune response in neonates during cardiac surgery).
