Summary
Bacteria secrete several proteases that are associated with virulence and modulation of the innate immune response. We identified alkaline proteases of Pseudomonas aeruginosa as an inhibitor of Toll-like receptor 5 and complement activation. Another yet uncharcarterized protease of P. aeruginosa was shown to inhibit PSGL-1-mediated neutrophil recuitment. Furthermore, the staphylococcal protein SSL3 was identified as an inhibitor of Toll-ike receptor 2 activation. All these bacterial proteins assist bacteria to evade recognition by the innate immune system.
